Your first reaction might be to fiddle with the printer controls, but don't do that quite yet. It could just be that you have a traffic jam in your print queue.
Sometimes print jobs get stuck without you noticing. Once a print job gets stuck, nothing else can print.
To see your print queue, double-click the printer icon in your taskbar notification tray, or go to Control Panel>>Printers and double-click on the printer icon. You can select the first print job and go to Document>>Cancel.
The worst part is that stuck jobs sometimes won't delete. They just sit there stopping your printer from doing its job.
